This series of sculptures is an attempt to make three-dimensional versions of my own linear designs. Building with clay instead of painting allows me the opportunity to engage with space more formally, treating the surface as canvas, drawing on my drawings. As forms develop, sometimes based on rough sketches, sections are built up or cut away as I abandon my initial ideas and discover new ones. Patterns are invented and blocks of colour are applied sometimes to just be scraped off, removed and pursued again or not. In between the beginning and the completion I’ve allowed myself to change my mind again and again until I feel I’m fully able to commit, deviating from my intentions to create something not yet imagined.
